“I have a spreadsheet for ETFs, another for tax, a third for super. None of it is current. And I genuinely don't know my net worth right now.”

Common questions, plain answers.

What are the income tax rates in Australia for FY 2025-26?

$0–$18,200 at 0%; $18,201–$45,000 at 16%; $45,001–$135,000 at 30%; $135,001–$190,000 at 37%; $190,001+ at 45%. Plus 2% Medicare levy.

How do I calculate my FIRE number in Australia?

Multiply your annual expenses by 25 (4% rule). $80,000/year means a $2M target. Many Australians use 3.5% (28.5× multiplier) for a more conservative rate.

How does CGT work when I sell shares or ETFs?

The profit is taxed at your marginal rate. Hold 12+ months and the 50% CGT discount applies — halving the taxable gain. Cost base includes purchase price plus brokerage.
